“Sleep” the term is a very very important part of your life. You spend about one-third of your time in a day. Without sleep, you can not form or maintain the passageways in your brain. It’s essential to several brain functions, including how nerve cells communicate with each other. Your mind stays active while you sleep. Expert says that sleep plays a housekeeping role that removes toxins in your brain that build up while you are wakeful.
You know, when you sleep, a lot of chemistry takes place in your body. During sleep, you pass through non-REM to REM sleep. Non-REM consist of few stages NREM stage 1,2,3 or even 4 and REM stands for ‘rapid eye movement.’ You began to start seen dreams in REM sleep. All happen in a cycle called sleep-cycle.
The sleep cycle is an undulation between the slow-wave and REM (Rapid Eye movement) phases of sleep. It is occasionally called the ultradian sleep cycleand sleeps–dream cycle, or REM-NREM cycle. The official figure given for the average length of the sleep cycle in an adult man is 90 minutes.
Generally, there are some stages of sleep pass through during the cycle. The steps are N1 (NREM stage 1), N2 (NREM stage 2), N3 (NREM stage), N4 (NREM stage 4) and REM (Rapid Eye movement) sleep. These stages progress at regular intervals from 1 through REM then begin start from N1. Usually, 90 to 110 minutes required for completion of one cycle and each step in a cycle take near about 5 to 15 minutes, The first sleep cycles each night have relatively short REM sleeps and long periods of a deep sleep, and later in the night, REM periods increase and deep sleep time decreases.
N1 stage is when the person is drowsy or awake to falling asleep. In this stage, the brain, waves, and muscle activity start to decrease.
N2 stage is when the person experiences a night of light sleep. Eye movement has stopped by this time. Brain wave frequency and muscle tonus are decreased. The heart rate, as well as body temperature, goes down in this stage.
N3 and N4 are the most difficult stages to be awakened. Most body’s part is now relaxed and also breathing, blood pressure, and body temperature are reduced.
As per the National Sleep Foundation, REM sleep as “A different state, in which dreams generally occur. The brain is conscious, and body paralyzed.” This exclusive stage is usually when the person is in the deepest stage of sleep and dreams.
